The Origins of the New Morality
"Ernie" has some thoughts on today's morality.
"I don't consider myself a conspiracy nut (though I am convinced a devious group is constantly at work keeping the Cubs out of a world series), so I'm totally confused about the downward plunge of American culture and values. Is there a conspiracy afoot to destroy us from within, or is this just the normal outcome of a free society? If it's a conspiracy, who's the architect and who's keeping it going? Is it mush brained liberals? Islamic terrorists? Communists? Rosie O'Donnell? Reverend Wright? Liberal media? I don't know the answer, but I think we need to take whatever time is necessary to study this deterioration and get it reversed. It's truly destroying us.
Look at today's immorality and the country's seeming lack of concern about it. Whether it's drugs, porn, homosexuality, greed, corruption, rampant promiscuity, filth driven entertainment, supporting a Muslim for president, or any of the other deadly sins, it's obvious that the "problem" is growing and shows no signs of lessening. It's sadly becoming the norm. Even TV commercials are so full of sexual content they should be rated X. I went into the bank the other day and the 2 young female tellers were wearing blouses that were barely keeping their un-bra'd boobs from falling out on the counter. That kind of attire may be fine for hookers walking Sunset Boulevard, but not in a bank. You have to ask why they think dressing that way is acceptable, and why bank managers allow it. I guess when they see their Hollywood idols dressing that way and changing sex partners on a weekly basis, it's got to be OK. Right?
In all this immorality I have to ask, "what is the purpose of it all?" Why is it so important to those in influential industries to force this indecency upon us? Is it just to see how far they can push the envelope, or is it part of a conspiratorial left wing agenda? Why wouldn't it be more appropriate to force higher moral values on us? Filth makes more money? Probably as good an explanation as any.
And lastly, how do we stop it and start moving back to the moral values and Christian principles that formed this once magnificent country? You can't look at the GOP for help. They've not shown one inkling of willingness to buck the liberal agenda. After all, what's more important? Standing up for decency or getting reelected? They've almost totally abandoned the conservative base of the party. Think about it. They had 8 years to prepare potential candidates for the presidential race and what did we get? A 70+ year old democrat in Republican clothing named John McCain.
Anyway, just some of my thoughts. I'd like to hear yours. Thanks.
Ernie"
There are many factors contributing to the moral decay in America, but the most important factor is the facilitator for all the others: political correctness. PC has robbed us of our first amendment right to free speech. If expressing your views on homosexuality, for instance, gets you branded a "homophobe", a new word invented by gays to insult and castigate those who don't tolerate their sexual proclivities. If you express Christian faith you will be insulted and smeared, referred to as a religious nut by athiests and liberals. If you say a prayer in school it might offend an athiest, so your government prohibits it. If you complain of illegal aliens you are called a racist or bigot. But PC is not a two-way street. You aren't allowed to insult, castigate or belittle the beliefs of athiests, gays, greenies, illegal aliens, Muslims, blacks or any other group that may hurl stones your way.
You mentioned that this country was founded on Christian principles and that is true. Our ancestors founded this country on a bedrock of mixed Christian, Catholic and even a little Jewish doctrine. Now their descendants are being punished for trying to maintain those same principles, slowly being outcast from mainstream society as engineered by the Supreme Court and the liberal athiest professors of a thousand universities who turn our own children away from our principles while "educating" them.
Without PC having been invented in those universities and forced upon us by court decree, facilitating all the rest, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in today.

I don't see any turnaround to the direction in which we are headed. Someone in Hollywood, whose name I can't recall, once said of his raunchy films, "We will continue making them until the audience no longer gasps when a particular scene is shown." I think we are getting pretty close to the last gasp.
I shudder to think what lies ahead if Obama is elected. It's like entering someone who has just completed his first soapbox derby into the Indy 500.

Blind Troll & Rook: I appreciate your input. You're 2 people I'd love to sit around McDonalds with drinking coffee and chatting. I think we're all on the same page here, but I wonder if people like us are the only ones out of 300 million who are in step.

I doubt that the new morality is the result of a conspiracy. Our moral predicament is the result of self-absorbed hedonists not caring about their wives, their kids, their parents, and others who are harmed by this self-absorbed behavior. The self-absorbed raise more little self-absorbed people, and so on.

Sorry Ernie, I almost missed your comments because I busy reading this article in my local paper:
http://tinyurl.com/3rzalp
The article tells about a “trans-gender” conference in a former logging town. Not too far into the article the word “celebrate” appears. Ever notice how contemporary use of “celebrate” or derivatives of the word has become PC code-speak? Nowadays “celebrate” often denotes group participation in something society once, or even to this day, considers unacceptable. Or it’s used by and about certain groups that have attained a special status in today’s world.

It seems to me that most of the things that the writer complains of are the result of what the public, particularly y the young and impressionable, are exposed to. That material, in turn, is generated to make money for the originators. If the public doesn't buy into what is being sold, it will no longer be available.
A the risk of giving a simplistic answer to a complex problem, I will say the fault lies largely with the parents. Parents cannot control all that their child may be exposed to at all times but they can control what they view, read or listen to at home. They can, byword and deed, educate their children. They can be parents instead of "friends" of their children; They can learn to say "no" to their children when that is the right answer. They need not cave in each and every time a child says that "everyone's going," "everyone' has one" or similar pleas.
If the writer wants to turn the world around, he and others must take the first step in the journey.

I agree we need stronger parental monitoring and control. However, the term "parent" insinuates 2 responsible, married people with children. In today's world we have too few "parents" and too many "breeders". You look at the innercity for example. They pop out those babies every few months just to get a bigger welfare check. Since the father's long gone, they turn their kids over to the gangs and streets to raise them. Wealthy "parents" are so self-absorbed that they don't want to spend the time necessary to parent a child. These people turn rearing their children over to TV, the internet and the kids' peers.
